|South African motocross team Red Bull KTM snatched a double victory at the third round of the premier National Motocross Championship in Bloemfontein.|
The orange team’s newest recruit Tristan Purdon finally unleashed the pace that everyone had been waiting for. Just two years ago Purdon conquered the muddiest track of the season to storm to MX1 national glory – a gutsy display that has since marked him as a favourite in the prestigious class.
On a track with deep ruts and daunting jumps, Purdon maximised the rough conditions to secure his first win of the season. Having come off a wrist injury at the start of the year, the rider still has some catching up to do as he steps into the fight for the national title.
“My wrist had been holding me back this season, and after the round in Cape Town I finally figured out how to sort that out. I started riding with no pain and obviously started to enjoy training again too. It’s so good to be back on the right track!” said Purdon.
|Adding to the excitement was Red Bull KTM teammate Joshua Mlimi’sfirst ever victory in the MX2 Class. After a 2018 season riddled with ups and downs, the rider has been desperate to shake off his ‘rookie status’ and reinstate himself as a force to be reckoned with.|
Slowly but surely, Mlimi has chipped away at the gap that the front runners have built in his class. A massive breakthrough came at the last round when he finally cracked a podium spot – which was clearly the confidence booster he needed coming into the Bloemfontein race.
“It was a long time coming and I could feel that victory was due. It was a hard-fought battle, but something just clicked this time. Thank you to all my sponsors that have backed me and believed in me all this time,” said Mlimi.
The rider has now set off to the USA for a month to “chase his American dream” and get some international racing experience.
After a quiet 2018 season by their own high standards, KTM South Africa’s Managing Director Franziska Brandl commented: “Seeing both Tristan and Joshua race to victory this weekend makes me incredibly proud. I’ve always known these two have what it takes, and Bloemfontein was the perfect track to showcase their impressive talent. All the hard work that is being put in on and off the track is paying off and race fans were rewarded with an exciting day’s racing. We are hoping to add more victories this season with our strong Red Bull KTM line up and can’t wait to see what the rest of the season holds in store for us.”
