Used Tyres SA has donated 50 tyres for learners at St Stithians Boys’ College in Sandton to use to create chairs for children at a Johannesburg inner-city school. This as part of the school’s Mandela Day Project.

“This year, we learned from one of our partners in Community Engagement – Community Hours SA, that there are children in Johannesburg inner-city schools who do not have chairs to sit on or desks to work at, but learn while sitting on cold cement floors,” explained Mrs. Gladys Ayaya, Director of Community Engagement at St Stithians Boys’ College. “We identified Yeoville Boys’ Primary as one such school and chose them to be the beneficiary of our project to honour Madiba.”

The project will see St Stithians learners converting the donated tyres into comfortable chairs by drilling holes through them and weaving through the drilled holes with ropes. Ayaya explained that the twofold benefits of this exercise will be to teach the school’s learners a new creative skill, while creating a product that will benefit children in the inner-city schools and improve their learning environment.

“We’re so grateful St Stithians approached us to play a part in this commendable project,” said Derick Oosthuizen, at Used Tyres SA. “It is incumbent upon the privileged to extend a hand to those less privileged, and what a tremendously creative and engaging way to do it, by upcycling used tyres in a project that benefits both givers and receivers on so many levels. Besides, what a great way to pay tribute to our beloved Madiba.”

St Stithians aims to complete the chairs timeously to hand over to Yeoville Boys’ Primary on or before Mandela Day.

Used Tyres SA is a division of TiAuto Investments and a proud provider of premium quality used tyres at affordable prices. The company puts tyres through a rigorous inspection process before making them available to the market.
